Located in the centre of the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur is a 91.6 hectare large recreational park with an imposing garden and lake scenery. In the 19th century, during the colonial period, Lake Gardens was a place of refuge from hectic life in the city and until today it has remained a small oasis and a place of tranquility within the heart of the city. There can be found various sculptures and a species-rich flora and fauna and it has a multitude of attractions to offer.
Here, an approx. 3,715 sqm large and up to 12 m roofing was constructed as a freeform geometry. The single-layer steel structure, measuring up to approx. 69 m was designed in the MERO PLUS® System. In order to preserve the existing old trees which would project beyond the roof MERO-TSK provided in their design and statics several adequate openings which serve for water drainage on one hand and for watering of the plants on the other hand. The roofing consists of different aluminum panels and laminated safety glass. A special glass print on specified single panels guarantee for the requested shading effect. The inclined supports imitate the trees habitus. This idea for the column shape the architect got on a trip to a nearby lake. The trees adapted automatically to the given situation and were growing slightly sloping above the water surface. In total, over 1,359 MERO nodes and 3,800 tubes were installed. The glass and aluminum panels are sealed by approx. 6,650 m silicon joints. The roofing integrates well into the natural floral scenery, and the park operators are planning to add also a pier and a kiosk in future.
