The Portuguese investors Sonae Sierra built the biggest shopping mall and leisure centre of Berlin on Alexanderstrasse. The golden canopies in front of the entrance areas were designed to give the impression that the inner building core, like a dancer in midmotion, is flinging out its precious robe as a fluttering invitation to visitors.
It was no problem to realize the irregular and complicated shapes of these canopies with the MERO-TSK space frame system of patented laser welded tubes. The space frame substructure was completely cladded with triangular sheets of coated aluminium. The canopies are suspended from steel cables. This creates the illusion of free formed shapes floating in the air without tethers.
